Magherafelt motorist said by District Judge to have 11 convictions for no insurance

A short pre-sentence report was ordered Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday in the case of a motorist said by the District Judge to have 11 convictions for driving with no insurance.

Judge Conor Heaney adjourned the case to November 18 and directed that the defendant be present in court for sentencing.

Forty-two-year-old Shane Maguire, of College Gardens, Magherafelt, faces charges of having no insurance, failing to produce his driving licence, having two defective lights and failing to illuminate a rear number plate on February 5.

Prosecuting counsel said the offences came to light when a police officer on a motorcycle stopped a van being driven by the defendant at the roundabout with Coolshinney Road and Magherafelt bypass on Moneymore Road, Magherafelt, at approximately 7.50pm.

She said the officer warned the defendant about the hazards and risks of driving with lights off on the vehicle as it was dark. Counsel said it later came to light that there was no insurance for the vehicle.
